Big welcome for Jamaican Olympians
KINGSTON, Jamaica, August 18, 2008 - Prime Minister Bruce Golding has promised a massive welcome home celebration for Jamaica's first gold medalist in the Beijing Olympics, Usain Bolt, and the rest of the Olympic Team.
Mr Golding, who watched Bolt’s victory in the men's 100-metre finals in world record time of 9.69 on television with other government officials, said he was proud of Jamaica’s accomplishments so far.
“It's a wonderful day for Jamaica and you have done us proud. It was a stunning performance and we are so proud of you,” he told Bolt in a telephone conversation just minutes after his victory.
“The games are not yet over and we expect a lot more from the team in the days ahead but I can assure you that we are planning a massive welcome home party for all of you.”
In his telephone conversation with Jamaica's participants in the race, Prime Minister Golding congratulated them, saying that the whole of Jamaica was very proud of them.
