  Second earthquake hits off Trinidad

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, July 4, 2008 - The University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre on Thursday recorded the second earthquake near Trinidad within the past week.

According to a release issued by the unit, the 5.6 magnitude tremor occurred east of Trinidad around 2:35 a.m.

"The earthquake was reported as felt in Galeota on Trinidad's east coast as well as offshore platforms east of Trinidad. There have been no confirmed reports of damage or injuries," it said.

The quake was the second in the past week. Last Friday, one occurred northwest of the island and was reportedly felt in St Augustine, Marabella, St Joseph, Blue Range and Glencoe in Trinidad as well as Grenada. There were no reports of damage or injuries during that event.
