KINGSTON, Jamaica, May 14, 2008 - Jamaica has a new National Security Minister following a Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Bruce Golding.
Former army man, Colonel Trevor MacMillan, was sworn in as Senator and appointed as the new minister on Tuesday, replacing Derrick Smith who is still recovering from surgery. Mr MacMillan's entry to the Senate was facilitated by the resignation of Senator Ian Murray.
In his address at the swearing in ceremony, Prime Minister Golding made it clear that he was not expecting overnight changes but he expressed confidence in the new minister's abilities.
"Trevor MacMillan is not Superman; is not a miracle worker. He brings to the job a tremendous amount of experience having served some 30 years in the security forces," he said.
The former national security minister Mr Smith will assume the post of Minister of Mining and Telecommunications while Clive Mullings who held that portfolio will retain his duties as Minister of Energy.
The Prime Minister said Mr Smith would assume his new duties after he has recovered fully. He will also resume his substantive responsibilities as Leader of the House and as the Minister responsible for Electoral Matters.
Meanwhile, Mr Mullings will continue to oversee the portfolio of Mining and Telecommunications.
