BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, July 4, 2008 - Barbados is now officially a part of an internationally recognised environmental campaign aimed at reducing the impact of cars on the environment.
The 'Make Cars Green' initiative of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) Automobile, Mobility and Tourism Division is being spearheaded locally by the Barbados Automobile Association (BAA) which also intends to work to reduce local road accidents.
A founding member of the Barbados Motoring Federation, the BAA has recently been accepted as the FIA's Barbados affiliate in the Automobile, Mobility and Tourism Division. The FIA is an international organisation grouping together automobile clubs and national sporting authorities from all over the world which have joined together in order to better carry on their activities.
President of the BAA, John Sealy, said the association is enthusiastic about the opportunity to have Barbados and its motorists benefit as a result of the island's participation in the international campaign. "One of the objects of our association is to protect and advance the legitimate interests of all owners and drivers of motor vehicles in Barbados. We, along with our partners, are pleased that we are assisting in Barbados being a part of the 'Make Cars Green' worldwide promotion, facilitated by the FIA and generously sponsored by Bridgestone Tyres internationally and Nassco Ltd in Barbados," he said.
"In addition to bringing the 'Make Cars Green' campaign to Barbados, we will support the Royal Barbados Police Force, the Traffic Management Division of the Ministry of Transport, Works and International Transport and the Barbados Road Safety Association in their various programmes aimed at reducing road accidents in Barbados," Mr Sealy said, adding that the Environmental Unit of the Ministry of Family, Youth, Sports and Environment would also be a partner in the continuing effort to protect the environment.
The BAA President appealed to Barbadians to get on board in supporting the 'Make Cars Green' campaign which promotes 10 tips for greener motoring. These include buying greener automobiles; planning your journey; checking tyre pressure; reducing loads and avoiding roof-racks; reducing air conditioning use; gentle acceleration; using engine braking; avoiding idling engines or warming them up before moving; and offsetting CO2 emissions.
